Who: Amber Arcades
Where: Utrecht, Netherlands
What: Band

So, who are you?

Where are you from?

Utrecht, the Netherlands.

What do you do?

I make music as Amber Arcades. Also, I work in immigration law.

What time is it where you are and what are you doing right now?

It's 10 AM and I'm in a van driving towards Calais to catch a boat to Dover, we're playing a gig in London tonight.

Who or what are you influenced by?

Everything and everyone.

Are you one of those people who really loves technology?

I definitely see all the benefits technological development brings and I support that. But if you're asking whether I get excited about the prospect of a new phone, no I don't.

Do you still listen to music? If so, what's been the best stuff you've heard all year?

I listen to music more hours in a day than that I don't listen to music. The year has only just begun but my fav record so far is that of my friends Quilt, called Plaza. There's so much in there, both musically and lyrically... from Fleetwood Mac kinda stuff to Krautrock vibes. I'll definitely keep listening to it for a while.

Do you read? Tell us about good books you read this year?

I always bring a lot of books on tour to read in the van, but I always find I end up staring out of the window more... Anyway, I'm working on my "Dutch classic novel" list right now. I recently read de Donkere Kamer van Damocles and it was an intensely good read. It's about WWII and this guy, a nobody basically, who turns into a war hero of sorts in the resistance. Though throughout the book you are left wondering whether you are reading about events as they are actually taking place, or if you are just reading about his hallucinations. Very surreal. Not sure if it's ever been translated to English though.

What are you currently working on?

I don't have a lot of time these days to really sit down and finish songs because we're on the road so much and I'm working full-time in between. So I'm mostly recording some scratch voice memos. I'm excited about getting back to proper writing though, hopefully soon.

Do you fancy yourself as some kind of artist?

I don't know, really... I'm just doing whatever feels right.

Quit... Quit... You should quit. You should quid. Should you quit?

According to who? I don't know, I can imagine wanting to focus on other things in a couple of years. Not right now though.

Are you just in it for the money?

No, just for the free food.

Can you give us the names of two other interesting people who you think we may not have heard of but should have heard of?

Some cool Dutch bands you should probably listen to: Blue Crime, the Homesick and Rats on Rafts.

Amber Arcades debut album is out this spring on Heavenly Recordings.
