Check which is the shallow end and note the point where you will be out of your depth.
Who: Juliet Escoria
Where: West Virginia, USA
So, who are you?
Juliet Escoria, but I also answer to Julia Jackson
What do you do?
I write stuff, and teach stuff, and also breathe and sleep and eat and love and hate and fuck and fight and cry and laugh and sometimes I even go to the gym and eat my vegetables.
Do you still listen to music? If so, what's been the best stuff you've heard all year?
Fat White Family's new album, also Conway Twitty when he was trying to be like Elvis, and finally this album Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll, which is basically a very convincing argument that oppression breeds great art.
Do you read? Tell us about good books you read this year?
I've read a lot of great manuscripts lately, by Elizabeth Ellen and Scott McClanahan and Sam Pink and Nikita Nelin.
I recently re-read Cruddy by Lynda Barry, which was one of my favorite books as a teen and I still love it a whole lot.
I am currently reading I Hate the Internet by Jarett Kobek and it's really fucking smart.
I have a book by Timmy Reed sitting in front of me on my coffee table right now. Timmy Reed is great. A story collection by Maryse Meijer is there also. I haven't read it yet but it looks really amazing.
What are you currently working on?
A novel that is sort of a faux memoir about the worst years of my life.
So do you fancy yourself as some kind of artist or what?
I do. You're not supposed to admit that because it sounds self-important or too self-serious or whatever, but yes, I do. I feel like people shouldn't be so afraid to admit to this. Aren't we all artists?
'Quit... quit... you should quit... you should quit... you should... you should...'. Should you quit?
No, never quit anything ever, including binge eating or heroin.
Are you just in it for the money?
Yes. How much am I getting paid to answer these questions, btw?
Can you give us the names of two other interesting people who you think we may not have heard of but should have heard of and who we can put these questions to?
Sarah Rose Etter, Noah Cicero, Kelly (aka Diddle) Knabb, Jamie Iredell, Penny Goring.
Juliet Escoria is the author of 'Black Cloud' (2014, Civil Coping Mechanisms), 'Witch Babies' (2015, Holler Presents - now sold out) and 'Witch Hunt' which is forthcoming May, 2016 on Lazy Fascist.
