Who: Katy Mongeau
Where: Providence Rhode Island, USA
Hi. Who are you?
I go back and forth between lamb and sheep.
Where are you from?
Florida but I feel like my life started all over in New England.
What time is it where you are? What's going on?
It is 2:37 pm and I am icing my brand new black eye that I just got from smacking into a tree branch while running.
Can you tell us a bit about your piece/pieces in Cassette 68?
It is a story about the period in my life after my father tried to murder my mother when I was 10 years old. I had a nervous breakdown, filled with sleepless weeks of waking nightmares. When I did begin to see him again, years later, I was overwhelmed with guilt when my mother found out I was trying to have a relationship with this person. People complain that they can’t tell what is going on in my stories so I’m taking advantage of this opportunity to explain it. I have never wanted to be obscure.
How do these pieces differ to what you've written before or don't they?
Aside from content, it’s a little more narrative than what I normally write, but only because it is a little longer.
Can you tell us a bit about what you're working on next?
I am working on a novella about pedophilia and god. Working on isn’t the right phrase. I am rewriting it for the third time this month, so more or less destroying it. And novella isn’t the right name. This is just a shorter book than a typical novel. Definitely not a novel either, because nothing happens in it, not a single movement.
And I just started a series of lyric essays about perfume/fragrances/scent/ sensation/etc.
Heard any good music this year?
Yes, I just got back from Savage Weekend, and I live in Providence where a lot of good things are from/come to. I am lucky to call many great bands/artists my friends.
Do you fancy yourself as some kind of artist or what?
Yes because anything else I’d call myself is too self-deprecating to put in a Q & A.
Finally, have you read anything good this year?
I have been frantic and worthless and incapable of reading anything that isn't one page long, except for two books that I have re-read five times each this year, and I think if I said them it would ruin their magic.
