Who: Matthew Bookin
Where: Buffalo, NY, USA
Hi. Who are you?
Matthew Robert Bookin.
My mother's maiden name was Matthews.
Robert was the name of my father's business partner.
& the family name Bookin was originally Boukinovitch - my great grandparent's changed it when they arrived from Russia.
Please don't steal my identity.
Where are you from?
I was born in Mt. Holly, New Jersey.
I currently live in Buffalo, New York.
What time is it where you are? What's going on?
It's late afternoon. I'm sitting in the living room of my new apartment. There is a very lush fern to my right. I have an intense fever and I'm drinking orange juice (heavy pulp) to fight it.
Can you tell us a bit about your piece/pieces in Cassette 89?
It's called The Nook. It's about dating and spiders.
I wrote the "expensive chair" section of the story first and then the rest of it spun out from there.
How does it differ to what you've written before or doesn't it?
It's more blatantly surreal than most of what I've written lately.
Also, it's narrated in third-person. I tried to rewrite sections of it in first-person, which is almost exclusively how I write, but it just didn't work as well.
Can you tell us a bit about what you're working on next or will that jinx it?
I wrote a book about death.
Do you ever still listen to real audio cassette tapes like some kind of unreconstructed hipster of five years ago? Great question, huh?
I went through that audio cassette renaissance way back in the golden age of 2012. I kept all my cassettes in a box with a bunch of shitty firecrackers. I no longer know where that box is.
My new roommate listens to Ice Cube and Marvin Gaye cassettes in the attic while he practices karate.
Can you swim?
Did you know they use swimming to defeat the villain in the 2002 American teen thriller Swimfan?
Matthew is featured in the upcoming sampler Cassette 89 available from Dostoyevsky Wannabe
