Check which is the shallow end and note the point where you will be out of your depth.

Who: Nicola Maye Goldberg.
Where: New York, United States
What: Mostly fiction.

Cat No: DW-346

What do you do?

Mostly fiction, sometimes poetry, very rarely nonfiction.

Stock question. Can you tell us a bit about your influences?

Anne Carson, Francesca Woodman, Zora Neale Hurston, Denis Johnson, Lauren Slater, Kier-La Janisse, Alice Notley, Ariana Reines, Sarah Kane, Masha Tupitsyn, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, John Berryman, Sylvia Plath, Alice Neel.

Can you tell us about your most recently published book and whether it does or doesn't differ from the types of things you've written before?

I have a book of poems called THE DOLL FACTORY coming out from Dancing Girl Press this summer. It's about violence, which I'm starting to think is what I almost always write about, even when I'm trying to write about something else.

What are you currently working on?

A novel in stories about the murder of a college girl and its reverberations throughout her community.

Swimmers Club has a focus on the state of independent culture at the moment (independent coffee shops, presses, record labels, etc). How healthy do you think independent culture is right now?

Oh god, I have no idea.

What influence, if any, does the city in which you live have on your world?

It probably would if I left my apartment more often.

Finally, can you swim?
