Who: Timothy Willis Sanders
Where: Austin, Texas, USA
Hi. Who are you?
Where are you from?
I live in Austin, Texas.
What time is it where you are? What's going on?
It’s 3:02 p.m. I’m typing this and my girlfriend is eating a chicken wrap thing.
Can you tell us a bit about your piece/pieces in Cassette 68?
It’s a piece roughly based on things that happened in my life during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.
How do these pieces differ to what you've written before or don't they?
I’ve never written this explicitly about race and privilege.
Can you tell us a bit about what you're working on next?
Right now I’m working on a high school novel set in the 90s.
Heard any good music this year?
Yeah, a record called Into the Heart of Love by the band Woo. Also, Young Thug’s Slime Season 3 is pretty good.
Do you fancy yourself as some kind of artist or what?
I do. But I secretly wish I didn’t care about art. People who can play video games all day guilt-free are people I envy.
Finally, have you read anything good this year?
I’ve been reading mostly history books for the last three years or so. The last book I read was Stalin by Stephen Kotkin. Next, I plan to read Into the Silence by Wade Davis. It’s about Mallory and WWI.
